Belgium committed to delivering 30 F-16 fighter jets by 2028 to Ukraine to help battle Russia’s invasion. This was part of a security and support accord signed by Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo. The agreement includes 977 million euros in military aid this year and support over the next decade. Zelensky arrived in Brussels from Spain as part of a European tour to rally support for Kyiv. Spain previously pledged one billion euros in military aid.
Brussels has committed a total of 1.2 billion euros in military support for Ukraine since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Zelensky’s visit to Belgium comes as Ukraine struggles to hold back a Russian ground offensive in the Kharkiv region. The Ukrainian leader is seeking more weapons for its troops and trying to gather support for a peace conference in Switzerland next month, excluding Russia. After Belgium, Zelensky is set to visit Portugal.
