The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is increasing personnel support for the US and UK in defense against Houthi rebels in the Red Sea. The crisis started in late 2023 when the Iran-backed group targeted Israeli-linked vessels in support of Palestinians in Gaza.
The ADF’s Operation Hydranth group will be deployed to help mitigate the conflict in Yemen through strike action support, with soldiers stationed at US operational headquarters. Australia’s government aims to aid partner forces in upholding international rules and norms to restore stability in the region.
Operation Hydranth is separate from ADF’s Combined Maritime Forces in Bahrain, focusing on maritime security in the Middle East and East Africa. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese confirmed that Operation Manitou under ADF has contributed to US and UK airstrikes against the Houthis in Yemen. The ADF has increased personnel involved in the operation to support allies and protect Australia’s national interest.
