The nuclear submarine collaboration known as AUKUS is allowing Australian defense companies to expand into the U.S., with one Australian company setting up shop inside a U.S. Army arsenal. The AUKUS agreement provides opportunities for Australian companies to access the U.S. defense market and transfer benefits back to Australia’s defense industry. Australia has received $1.6 billion in U.S. defense contracts through AUKUS, with significant investments made to support these contracts.
While AUKUS is facilitating direct relationships with the U.S. government and deeper partnerships with U.S. industry, there are still barriers to working together, including challenges related to marketing to the government and coordinating across different time zones. AUKUS is organized into two pillars of effort focusing on nuclear-powered submarines and critical technologies such as artificial intelligence and hypersonics, among others.
Australian defense companies like Nioa Group and EOS Defence Systems are looking to expand their technology development work in the U.S. through partnerships and acquisitions. Nioa Group has established a footprint at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, while EOS has set up a production footprint in Huntsville, Alabama. Both companies are aiming to bring their technology to the U.S., with Nioa Group focusing on ammunition and EOS on next-generation weapon systems and directed energy solutions. Smaller Australian companies like 3ME Technologies are also exploring opportunities in the U.S. defense market, with a focus on battery safety and electrification.
