In 2024, the Army will have two new missile systems, including the Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), which will cover ranges of up to 300 miles, and the Long Range Hypersonic Weapon intended to reach ranges out to 1,725 miles.
The PrSM has successfully completed a test, achieving “early operational capability,” enabling soldiers to begin working with the system in 2024.
Development for the hypersonic weapon prototypes has encountered delays, following the cancellation of key tests, and is now expected to field in 2024, albeit later than originally planned.
The two new weapons are critical for the Army’s Multi-Domain Task Forces and Strategic Mid-Range Fires battery, forming part of the Army’s Strategic Fires Battalion, all overseen by the MDTF.
The Army formed the 1st MDTF in the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command in 2018, followed by the 2nd MDTF in Europe in 2021 and the 3rd MDTF in the Pacific in 2022.
