The A/MH-6 Little Bird helicopter, a signature aircraft for special operations forces, will not be replaced as expected due to the cancellation of the Army’s Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft program in February 2023. This cancellation disrupts plans to phase out the Little Bird by the mid-2030s, pushing its use into the 2050s or longer alongside the MH-60M Black Hawk helicopter.
The Little Bird, which is built by personnel at the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, has received upgrades but faces capability gaps and strains. USSOCOM is now exploring industry improvements to the drivetrain and rotor blades to enhance speed, as funding for hybrid power solutions is lacking.
Planned upgrades such as a next-generation tactical radio system, improved sensor systems, and a new fuselage will sustain the Little Bird until 2034. Beyond that point, USSOCOM is seeking new solutions for the specialized aircraft. The unique challenges of maintaining this aircraft and the lack of a replacement program highlight the need for continued innovation in rotary wing technology.
