The Air Force and Space Force launched a generative AI tool on Monday, called the Non-classified Internet Protocol Generative Pre-training Transformer (NIPRGPT), for tasks like summarizing reports, IT assistance, and coding. Alexis Bonnell, chief information officer at the Air Force Research Laboratory, aims to make data more accessible and customizable within the services using this tool.
The Defense Department has been exploring generative AI tools like ChatGPT to make daily tasks more efficient, with the Navy rolling out a conversational AI program called “Amelia” in 2023. Colleen Roller, senior computer scientist at AFRL, stated his team is researching how the technology can be used for administrative tasks and tactical operations.
AFRL developed NIPRGPT using publicly available AI models, aiming to test and integrate tools provided by commercial partners. The effort will help determine the best approach for purchasing these capabilities, depending on the use cases and demand in the Air Force and Space Force.
