The head of Air Combat Command expects the Air Force to choose the 6th generation fighter jet developer this year. The fate of the Air Force’s NGAD family of systems has been in question due to budget issues. The ACC commander expects the selection to happen this year. Lockheed Martin and Boeing are expected to be contenders for NGAD. NGAD is intended to replace the F-22 Raptor fleet in the 2030s. The Air Force has proposed retiring older F-22s to fund NGAD development. Wilsbach supports keeping the Block 20 F-22s. TR-3 upgrades for the F-35 have stalled, but an interim solution may allow deliveries to resume.
