Sophisticated networking and communications capabilities from the U.S. Navy’s Project Overmatch are deployed on three carrier strike groups, according to the commander of the Third Fleet. Project Overmatch is part of the Department of Defense’s Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control campaign, initiated in 2020 amidst competition with Russia and China.
Vice Adm. Michael Boyle revealed during a discussion that Project Overmatch is operational on three carrier strike groups, without specifying names or duration. Project Overmatch engineers are currently identifying connectivity gaps and solutions at the Army’s Project Convergence Capstone 4.
Navy officials previously stated that Project Overmatch would focus on the Indo-Pacific before expanding globally. Trials began with the Carl Vinson strike group last year, showing continuous learning and improvement. The Navy requested $192 million for Project Overmatch in fiscal 2024, pending passage of a complete defense budget.
