The Hamas authorities in Gaza reported that an Israeli strike on a UN-run school in Nuseirat on Saturday killed 16 people. Israel’s military claimed to have targeted “terrorists” around the Al-Jawni school. The health ministry in Gaza, controlled by Hamas, condemned the strike and reported that 50 injured individuals were taken to the hospital from the school. The school, run by UNRWA, had around 7,000 people seeking shelter at the time of the attack, with most casualties being children, women, and elderly.
Hamas labeled the attack as a “new massacre” as part of Israel’s “war of genocide” against the Palestinian people. Israel stated that the location was used as an operational infrastructure for attacks against IDF troops, with measures taken to reduce harm to civilians. UNRWA confirmed that two workers were killed in another strike in central Gaza, and a total of 194 of its workers have been killed since the war began.
Civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal stated that “absolutely no place in the Gaza Strip is safe.” The war began with an attack on southern Israel resulting in the deaths of 1,195 people, mostly civilians, with Hamas militants seizing hostages. Israel has conducted an offensive that has killed at least 38,098 people in Gaza, mostly civilians.
